In the last general elections, all the candidates except the winner and the second placed candidate on all the 13 seats of Purvanchal had lost their deposits. Apart from political parties, 208 people including independent candidates had contested elections on 13 seats. In this, the deposits of 182 candidates, except the winner and his nearest rival, were confiscated.

Maximum 31 candidates were in Varanasi seat. Here Prime Minister Narendra Modi won while SP-BSP alliance candidate Shalini Yadav came second. Ajay Rai of Congress stood third but could not save the deposit.

Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey of BJP and Sanjay Chauhan of SP in Chandauli, Vijendra Singh of BJP and Sanatan Pandey of SP in Ballia, Afzal Ansari of BSP and Manoj Sinha of BJP in Ghazipur and Akhilesh Yadav of SP and Dinesh Lal of BJP in Azamgarh. In the by-elections of Yadav Nirahua and 2022, only BJP’s Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirahua and SP’s Dharmendra Singh Yadav could save their deposits.

Similarly, in Mirzapur, Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal and Sunnam Istari of SP, Shyam Singh Yadav of BSP and KP Singh of BJP in Jaunpur and Ramesh Chandra of BJP and Ranganath Mishra of BSP in Bhadohi, besides Bholanath of BJP and Tribhuvan of BSP in Machhilishahr. Only Ram’s surety was left.
