Expansion

With a landslide victory, the BJP has formed a government with absolute majority in Varanasi. Mayor candidate Ashok Tiwari defeated OP Singh of SP by a record margin of 1,33,137 votes. Before this, no candidate for the post of Mayor has won the election with such a big margin. In the BJP’s bastion, the opposition’s face has been cleared. The deposits of the mayoral candidates of Congress, BSP and Aam Aadmi Party were forfeited. Not a single councilor candidate of BSP has been able to win the election. Congress has also suffered heavy losses.

According to the election results declared by the State Election Commission, the BJP has swept the Varanasi Municipal Corporation elections. The Congress had fielded its candidates from 86 wards, but could win only on 8. Congress candidates could not even save their deposits in more than 65 seats. This crushing defeat of the party has forced the Congress leaders to introspect.

Congress got victory in Muslim dominated areas

Out of 100 wards of the Municipal Corporation, the Congress had fielded its candidates in 86 seats only. There was no Congress candidate in the remaining 14 wards. The party claims that in four wards his nomination was rejected and in the rest he supported the independent candidate.
