The actress we are talking about is none other than Urmila Matondkar. Urmila started her film career at the age of 3 with the 1977 film Karma. She gained recognition by playing the role of one of the three child artists in the 1983 hit film Masoom. Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi played the lead roles in this film.
After this, Urmila debuted as a lead actress with Narasimha released in 1991. This film was a hit. After this, she worked in some average and semi-hit films like Chamatkar and became a star.
In 1995, Urmila appeared in a very glamorous style in Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Rangeela’. This film was one of the highest grossing Indian films of that year. Her performance, screen presence and dance in the film made Urmila a top actress overnight.
After this, Urmila gave hits like Judaai, Satya and Khoobsurat. In the year 2003, her performance in the horror thriller Bhoot was highly praised.
In the 2000s, Urmila’s films started to flop at the box office. Although she gave some critically acclaimed films like Ek Hasina Thi, box office success had largely eluded her.
In 2008, she starred in Karzzzz, a remake of the 1980s classic Karz. The film also featured Himesh Reshammiya, Shweta Kumar, Dino Morea and Danny Denzongpa. The film proved to be a box office disaster and ruined Urmila’s career.
The actress’ last release of the same year, EMI, was also a flop. Since then, Urmila has not appeared in any films but has appeared on TV as a judge in reality shows.
By the way, it is said that the biggest reason for Urmila’s career sinking was Ram Gopal Varma and his films. The news of the alleged affair of both of them was also always in the news. In such a situation, many other directors also started shying away from doing films with Urmila. She also kept refusing to do films with any other director. This mistake of hers overshadowed her excellent career and she became a flop actress. Urmila Matondkar was last seen in the Marathi film ‘Ajoba’ which was released in 2014. After this, she did a special cameo in the 2018 film ‘Blackmail’.
In March 2016, Urmila Matondkar married Kashmiri businessman and model Mohsin Akhtar Mir, who was 9 years younger than her. Later, clarifying the news of religious conversion, Urmila said that she has not changed her religion even after marriage. She is a Hindu even after marriage and her husband and in-laws never pressured her to convert. Urmila Matondkar had said that she will always remain a Hindu.
A few years ago, Urmila Matondkar was in the news for starting her political career. The actress joined the Indian National Congress in 2019. She contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the Mumbai North constituency but lost.
The same year, she resigned from the party citing internal politics and then in 2020, she joined Shiv Sena in the presence of Uddhav Thackeray.
Currently, Urmila Matondkar is neither doing films nor is she pursuing a political career but she is definitely living a luxurious life. According to media reports, the estimated net worth of the actress is Rs 68 crore.
