Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has vehemently denied any claim of imposing or proposing so-called ‘toilet tax’ in the state. Speaking to the media in New Delhi today, he said that such claims are baseless and should not be used for political purposes. He said, “In view of the Haryana Assembly elections, the BJP is either playing the religion card or sometimes raising the issue of fabricated toilet tax. One should not try to politicize the issues just for political gains, Especially when the allegations are far from reality.” Shri Sukhu further said that before the Assembly elections-2022, the then BJP government had offered freebies worth Rs 5000 crore, including the provision of free water, to achieve electoral success. Despite these measures, the people of the state voted in favor of the Congress Party and the Congress government was formed in the state. He said that free water facility is also being provided to five star hotels. The Chief Minister said that in view of this, the present state government has taken steps to rationalize water subsidy and has decided to impose a minimum charge of Rs 100 per month per connection in rural areas. He said that in the interest of the state, families who are able to pay water bills have no problem in doing so.
