Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekhar on Wednesday courted controversy by claiming that a book based on the Hindu religious text Ramayana incites hatred in the society.

Addressing the students at the 15th convocation of Nalanda Open University, he described Ramcharit Manas and Manusmriti as books that divided society.

The Education Minister said, why was Manusmriti burnt, because many abusive words were written in it against a large section. Why was Ramcharit Manas opposed and which part was opposed? He said, lower caste people were not allowed to get education and Ramcharitmanas says that lower caste people are poisonous. After drinking the milk of education, they become like snakes.

He said that Manusmriti and Ramcharitmanas are such books, which spread hatred in the society, as they prevent Dalits-backwards and women from getting education in the society. Chandrashekhar said, Manusmriti, Ramcharit Manas, Guru Golwalkar’s Bunch of Thoughts…these are such books which spread hatred. Country will not become great by hatred, country will become great by love.

Earlier this month, Kerala minister and communist leader N.B. Rajesh made a similar statement about Manusmriti. He claimed that the caste system was based on the Manusmriti.
