Viewers are fools anyway, ‘Brazen’ will prove it – News18 Hindi

Review: The MeToo movement was started by Tarana Burke in 2006, but for many years it was not questioned, rather it was suppressed and crushed in the male-dominated society. In 2017, famous actress and activist Alisa Milano gave a new direction to this movement by turning this movement into national and then international headlines through her tweet. After this, not only in Hollywood but many men had to quit their jobs, resign from their posts or were fired from their jobs. Apart from this, Alisa Milano has always maintained the image of a thoughtful actress with her opinion and her struggles. Although for this he has had to face bitter insults, cheap trolling and fierce opposition on social media, yet his own thinking has always remained firm and rests on his point of view. So when Alisa was cast as the main character in the movie “Brazen” based on the book “Brazen Virtues” by renowned author Nora Roberts, millions protested, to the point that Nora herself had to write that she was a supporter of Alisa. And Nora has full support for her selection in this role. Brazen is released on 13 January 2022 on Netflix.

The story of Brazen is like a typical crime thriller and most of Nora Roberts’ books are of the same mood so the audience reaction will be general – I have already seen this in many movies. The film has several weaknesses in terms of plot and worst of all, it is not at all clear for what kind of audience this film is made. Marketing has a big hand behind movies in Hollywood. Product, Price, Promotion, Place and People i.e. 5 P’s of marketing decide everything from development to distribution of a film. Brazen’s problem is that he is wrong on all counts. Shortly after the start of the film, it is understood that on whom the suspicion of murder can go and who is more likely to be the culprit. There is neither fear in the scenes of bloodshed, nor is there any thrill in the detective work done in search of the murderer. Therefore, if you are thinking of watching Brazen, then stop it because even the elements of crime investigation have not been threaded properly in it.

Kathleen (Emily), sister of successful crime novelist Grace (Alisa), is a school teacher who also works as a model on an adult website. Kathleen bleeds. Grace tries to solve the case with the help of Kathleen’s neighbor, police detective Ed (Sam Page). During this, another girl working on an adult website bleeds. The case is barely moving forward. Since Grace is a crime novelist, she officially helps with the police investigation. Kathleen’s school students are also questioned. Meanwhile, another model is fatally attacked and she survives. The real killer is caught with the help of a police investigation and Grace’s brain. In the case of serial murder, the most important thing is to find the pattern. The patterns in Brazen are simple, so Kathleen’s customers on the adult website are the only ones to be suspicious. The real murderer of these customers can be the person who knows the real identity of these models, belongs to the same city and knows any one of the three very well. The audience understands this, but the police and Grace take a long time to verify this.

The funny thing is that within 10 minutes after Kathleen is killed, the audience understands who the murderer is and why he might have committed the murder, but the police who have been doing murder investigation for many years and Grace who have been investigating murder for many years. She has been writing mystery novels, one by one, at the end they reach the same murderer whom the audience had already recognized. Many wonderful murder mysteries like Zodiac, Murder on the Orient Express, Seven or Clue have been made. Apart from this, novelists like James Hadley Chase, Earl Stanley Gardner, Agatha Christie have written hundreds of novels on the investigation of murder. Moreover, Nora Roberts’ book Brazen Virtues (on which the film is based) was also published in 1989. While making a film on murder mystery novels, it is necessary to add mystery and thrill to the screenplay and the identity of the real criminal is kept hidden till the end of the film. There is nothing like this in the film Brazen.

The screenplay by Edith Swenson, Donald Martin and Suzette Couture is downright tired. Romantic dialogues have also been kept very ridiculous, which seem completely opposite to the theme of the film. There’s no sense of mystery from Sean Kirkby’s production design, and neither do editor Christopher Smith’s scissors. Director Monica Mitchell has directed dozens of television movies and television series. This is another film in the same episode and needless to say it is extremely boring. When writers and directors take the audience for fools and expect the audience to feel as much thrill as they felt while writing or directing, then a brazen film is made. Due to its release on Netflix, there will be lakhs of viewers but hardly a few thousand fans. Neither a properly made romantic thriller nor a murder mystery, watching Brazen is like inviting a headache and proving yourself a fool.
