Due to the cold winds coming from the mountains, the entire North India including Punjab and Haryana is in the grip of severe cold wave. The chill has increased due to lack of sunlight. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert of severe cold in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. Road traffic, trains and airlines were affected due to dense fog. 225 domestic and international flights were delayed due to dense fog since late Tuesday night. At the same time, more than 125 trains ran late by 2-10 hours.
Maximum temperature reached 6.8 degrees below normal
The maximum temperature in Amritsar was recorded at 9.8 degrees on Wednesday, which was 6.8 degrees below normal. Whereas, 12.2 degrees were recorded in Ludhiana, 12.6 degrees in Patiala, 12.2 degrees in Pathankot, 11.0 degrees in Faridkot, 10.1 degrees in SBS Nagar. On the other hand, the minimum temperature of Punjab recorded a drop of 0.8 degrees, but it remained 1.6 degrees above normal. The minimum temperature in Patiala was 6.2 degrees, Ludhiana was 6.1 degrees, Amritsar was 6.6 degrees, Pathankot was 7.6 degrees. Faridkot recorded 6.0 degrees, SBS Nagar 5.7, Faridkot 8.1 degrees.
Fog and cold in Haryana, Fatehabad the coldest
Fatehabad was the coldest in Haryana. The minimum temperature in Fatehabad was 5.4 degrees Celsius, while in Bathinda the minimum temperature was 5.7 degrees Celsius. Melting cold continues in Haryana also. Karnal was the coldest at 6 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh, the capital of both the states, was recorded at 7.2 degrees Celsius.
Himachal plains in the grip of dense fog
There was dense fog in the plains of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday morning and evening. It is extremely cold in the morning and evening. Due to this change in weather, the minimum temperature in these areas remained less than four degrees. Yellow alert has been issued for fog in many areas of Solan, Mandi and Sirmaur including Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra on Thursday.
No respite from dry winter till 20 in Jammu and Kashmir
The bone-chilling cold has increased amid the dry season in Jammu and Kashmir. Amidst the cold wave, people are not expected to get relief from dry winter till January 20. According to the Meteorological Department, due to western disturbance on January 17, there may be light snowfall in the mountainous areas. It is colder in Jammu than in Srinagar. The day temperature in Jammu on Wednesday fell 9.1 degrees Celsius below normal to 9, while in Srinagar the temperature rose 6.8 degrees below normal to 12.9 degrees Celsius. The night temperature is in minus in most parts of Kashmir. There is a layer of ice on other water bodies including Dal Lake. The temperature in Leh on Tuesday night was recorded at minus 11.2 degrees Celsius.
