Generally, doing so is considered taboo in Indian families and the younger brother’s wife performs purdah from her elder brother. But, this unique custom is seen in the weddings of Bihar.
A curtain is kept between the son-in-law and the daughter-in-law
Presently people are becoming modern minded and the influence of western style is also being seen in the Indian society, but despite this, there are most of the families where a veil is kept between the brother-in-law and the daughter-in-law. It is seen in Indian families that the younger brother’s wife does not even walk in front of her brother-in-law without wearing a scarf on her head and the brother-in-law cannot even touch his brother’s wife. Besides this, the younger brother’s wife cannot even take the name of her brother-in-law. But this custom of Bihar is quite different from all these things.
Brother-in-law performs special rituals during marriage
Actually, in the weddings of Bihar, when the groom applies vermilion on his bride’s forehead and after that there is a ritual of veiling. Which is done by the brother-in-law only. During this, the groom’s elder brother places a veil on the bride’s head. During this time the bride’s head is kept uncovered. After this, the brother-in-law puts a veil on the bride’s head using the new saree. However, during this time the brother-in-law takes care that his hand touches the bride’s head. But despite this, if one touches hands then it is not considered bad and this custom is followed in weddings.
