Abhaya in Sanskrit means fearlessness. Thus this mudra is a symbol of security, establishing peace and removing fear. Most of the statues of ancient times will be seen in Abhaya Mudra.

Abhaya Mudra in Buddhism

Let us tell you that there are many such statues and pictures of Lord Buddha of the Gupta period, in which he is in Abhaya Mudra with one of his hands raised up.

Statue of Nataraja

Apart from this, this 11th century Chola period statue of Tamil Nadu is also in Abhaya Mudra. Shiva’s Nataraja image connects him with the roles of the creator, protector and destroyer of the universe. Because the damru in Nataraja’s right hand becomes the first sound of creation. At the same time, the fire in the upper left hand is Agni which will destroy the universe and with the lower right hand he is in Abhaya Mudra, a gesture to remove fear. These symbols mean that devotees can achieve salvation through faith in Shiva.
