A special fungus present in the gastrointestinal tract of a patient suffering from this disease converts carbohydrates into alcohol through microbacterial fermentation. According to the University of Virginia School of Medicine, ABS is a rare disease. Medical science has been aware of it for more than 50 years, but till now very limited information is available about it.

ABS Syndrome?

According to doctors, when there is an imbalance of some fermentation microorganisms in the small intestine, especially yeast like Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Apart from this, if due to some reason it increases too much then it becomes the cause of ABS syndrome. This imbalance ferments carbohydrates and converts them into ethanol, causing an intoxication-like effect. According to doctors, generally ABS is detected only in adulthood.

Let us tell you that Auto Brewery Syndrome (ABS) is called Gut Fermentation Syndrome. (GSS) can affect people of any gender or age. According to a report in the Indian Express, people suffering from diabetes, obesity, intestinal disease and those with weak immunity are at greater risk of this disease. People who genetically have ADH (alcohol dehydrogenase) and ALDH (aldehyde dehydrogenase) have difficulty digesting ethanol. These are two factors that help in promoting Auto Brewery Syndrome.

Symptoms of the Syndrome?

Symptoms of Auto Brewery Syndrome   It is exactly like the intoxication of alcohol. The level of alcohol in the blood increases. Apart from this, there is difficulty in speaking, confusion and stammering of the tongue. The skin there turns red. At the same time, some patients also show gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, flatulence and diarrhea.
