The question is a simple one. What is fire? If you are asked, what will you answer? Is burning a process or its result? Can a thing that is hot cause burns? It has neither a shape nor a color! Is it a gas or is it something else and the more interesting thing is that how do its different colors come into existence? Understanding this is not as easy as it seems.
If seen from the scientific point of view, fire is a process which produces both heat and light. It is these chemical reactions and their effects that we collectively call fire. The process of burning or combustion takes place in this. Its reactions require the presence of oxygen, a burning substance and a certain temperature.
Changes in the above mentioned factors can change the type of fire. Due to this its color changes. But the main reason for the color of fire is the burning substance. Candle is used to understand and explain the process of burning of fire. It requires all the energy to burn and in the absence of air it cannot burn.

Speed also plays an important role in the type of fire. Generally, things that can burn are called inflammable substances, but some things catch fire so quickly that they explode. Such things are called explosive substances. Some of these can also be controlled. The gas burned for cooking in the kitchen is an example of this. At the same time, gunpowder causes uncontrolled explosion even with the slightest spark.

Actually, every substance can burn under some circumstances. But under normal circumstances, inflammable substances can be used as fuel. The heat released when they burn is used for many purposes. The fuel which produces more heat is said to be better. But it becomes difficult to control them. So next time if someone asks you a question about fire, what will you tell?
