Today we will talk about 4 different types of trains running in Indian Railways (Difference between DEMU and MEMU) and know their differences. In fact, someone asked on the social media platform Quora – “What is the difference between DEMU, MEMU, Tram, Metro and other normal trains running in Railways?”
How are local trains and normal trains different?
EMU, DEMU, or MEMU trains are known as self-propelled vehicles because they do not have a separate engine or locomotive. Whereas in other trains, there is a separate engine which pulls the entire train. Because of this, all these trains do not cover long distances, they are run only within the city or between two nearby cities.
EMU and MEMU
EMU is known as Electric Multiple Unit. It used to run on electricity from electric wires. There was no separate ladder to climb into its racks i.e. coaches, due to which the platforms were made high. This is a train running with a unit of 3 coaches each which has an inbuilt engine. When this EMU was modified and stairs were installed keeping in mind the stations built at road level, it was called Modified EMU (MEMU).

Now, at some places, electric wires did not reach, so there was inconvenience in running of trains. At such places, these local trains were run using diesel, due to which they were known as DEMU i.e. Diesel Electrical Multiple Unit. According to Indian Railway Info, MEMU trains were designed for rural and semi-urban areas where stations were not elevated, but were at ground level. Whereas EMU was made for urban and semi-urban areas.

Tram and Metro
Now let’s talk about metro and tram. Metro has started running in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow etc. Metro coaches are air conditioned. Talking about Delhi Metro, it has 6 or 8 coaches and they also run using electricity only.
These are underground or made elevated. On the other hand, trams still run in Kolkata and they usually have two coaches. These are also run with the help of electricity. They run on the roads in the middle of the city.
