Zero Shadow Day: Yesterday at 12.17 pm, in many parts of the country including the world, suddenly the shadow of everything stopped being visible. Actually, it happened due to a special geographical event. Which is called Zero Shadow Day. This happened on 25th April at all the places situated at 130 Latitude. For some time, the shadow of any vertical object or human stopped being formed. Many events on earth happen only occasionally. Like solar eclipse and lunar eclipse. The incident of Zero Shadow Day is also one of them. However, such a situation arises twice in a year.
What is Zero Shadow Day?
Yesterday, the position of the sun above the head became such that people stopped seeing even their shadow. That’s why it is called Zero Shadow Day. This is the day when the sun comes directly above our head at a particular time of the day. Because of which no shadow is created for us. For this reason this condition is called zero shadow.
Where does the shadow go?
It is not that the shadow completely disappears on this day. Actually, when the sun is directly above our head, its rays fall on us vertically. Because of which our shadow is formed completely under our feet instead of being spread here and there. Because of which no shadow is visible when standing straight.
sun and earth position
This special condition is caused by the tilt of the Earth’s axis of rotation. The Earth, instead of being perpendicular to the orbiting plane of the Sun, is inclined to it by 23.5 degrees. For this reason, the sun is not able to come directly above our head every day in the afternoon. But, this happens twice a year on the earth at the place between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, when the sunlight is possible to fall on the earth. That is, the places between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn have zero shadow days twice a year.
When will be the next Zero Shadow Day?
Yesterday i.e. on 25th April, this feat happened in many other parts of the world including Bengaluru. Significantly, the situation of zero shadow is not created everywhere. Zero shadow day is limited to places in the middle of the tropics. It is formed only between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The next such day in Bengaluru will be on 18 August.
