Holding the hand of her husband Cody during his last days, Kirsten Clawson wondered again and again whether anyone could love her more. He was having difficulty even imagining this. But 13 months after Kody took his last breath, Kirsten, 45, remarried with a new family. Initially she used to blame herself for this relationship, but now she calls it the right decision. It is about December 2020, when despite medical trials and chemotherapy, Kirsten’s husband Cody’s life could not be saved. Kirsten was devastated when she lost her husband of 43 years to leukemia. But in those last days of her life, her husband made a touching promise to her, and Kirsten says it’s because of him that she has found happiness again.

Kirsten recalls, “I asked Kody what he wanted my future to look like, and did he want me to get married again?” In response to my question my husband looked at me and whispered yes, then said ‘I’m going to the other side and find a family that needs you. Kirsten said that I had asked this question because I knew that now I have to think about my future without him. A few days after their conversation, Cody breathed his last and Kirsten became a widow at the age of 43. Kody had two daughters from his first marriage, so Kirsten promised to keep the 19 and 17 year old daughters in her life. Due to not having children of her own, she started loving both of them like her own children. Kirsten further said that after her husband’s death, I could not face those painful memories in my home, so I went back to my parents for a few months. I started living my life on autopilot mode because everything seemed hopeless without Kodi.

However, after a few months, Kirsten came to know about a Facebook group of widows and widowers, knowing about which Kirsten felt relieved. In that group, in September 2021, he befriended a widowed woman, Brittany. Brittany was dating online in those days. I wanted to do the same, but Cody had only been gone for ten months, so I thought it was too soon for me. After this, Kirsten remembered the conversation she had with Cody, after which she joined a dating app. The very next day after joining the dating app, Kirsten met a man named Jason. Kirsten said that Jason was also part of the same Facebook group. Jason had two children and his first wife had died. Kirsten said what were the chances that we would meet online on a dating site? It was a sign, so I messaged her. After exchanging messages for a few days, Jason called Kirsten. Kirsten said that we talked about Cody and Jason’s wife Valerie, who died of cancer at the age of 40. Like Cody, he too fought a nine-month battle with death. Over the next few months, we talked for hours and finally decided to go on a date.

“I was nervous even going on our first date to the Thai restaurant, until I saw Jason,” says Kirsten. The pair quickly became close after their first date, but Kirsten admitted that she felt like she was ‘cheating’ on Kody. But he reminded himself that this was what he wanted for me. Neither of Kody’s daughters or Jason’s sons had any problem with the couple’s budding romance. She says, “I also met Jason’s sons, who were very sweet. “Both boys were very happy with our relationship, and Cody’s (first husband) girls were happy too.” Kirsten married Jason in the presence of all her family and friends in January 2022, thirteen months after saying her final goodbye to her first husband. A few months after marriage, Kirsten came to know that she was pregnant. In December 2022, she gave birth to her daughter Maisie. Kirsten said that I also took my daughter Macy to Cody’s grave. Before he died, Cody told me that he would find me a family and he kept this promise. I will always love Cody and Jason will always love Valerie. Our family is truly a gift sent from heaven.
