When his father Nanabhai Bhatt’s father came for the last rites, he applied vermilion on his maang for the first time. Mahesh Bhatt was surprised to see this. He said, “I remember when she died, and my father came with his wife, at that time he put sindoor on her forehead and I said too little too late. It broke me. He never accepted her publicly. Wanted a picture of him doing it.”

When Mahesh told his father about his mother’s last wish, he refused to accompany her to the Shia cemetery. He said, “I told her that she told me that she wanted to be buried where her mother is buried in the Shia cemetery. I looked at her face and her face turned white. And she said (with folded hands ) I’m sorry son, my religion doesn’t allow me to go there. It broke my heart.”
