When suddenly a farmer became the owner of the train, a mistake of the railway proved costly for him, the incident became historic

There is no dearth of rich people in India. Their hobbies are also no less lofty. But can a person in India own a train? If we talk in terms of law, then no person in India can buy a train nor run his own train on the tracks of Indian Railways! But there was a time in the era of independent India, when a farmer became the owner of a train. This historic event happened in the 21st century. A farmer from Punjab became the owner of the entire Shatabdi Express due to a mistake of the railways.

Sampooran Singh is a resident of Katana village in Ludhiana. One day he suddenly became the owner of the Golden Shatabdi Express running between Delhi and Amritsar. The foundation of this incident was laid in the year 2007 when the railways bought the land of many farmers, including Sampooran Singh, to build the Ludhiana-Chandigarh railway line.

For this, the railway decided to take Rs 25 lakh per acre, but Rs 71 lakh was given for each acre of land in the nearby village. Sampooran Singh went to court against this discrimination. First the court increased the compensation amount from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 50 lakh and then to more than Rs 1.5 crore

The court had ordered the confiscation of this train and made Sampooran Singh its owner. (Symbolic picture: indiarailinfo)

. Northern Railway was ordered to make the payment by 2015, which the railway could not do. In 2017, the court again ordered the attachment of the station master’s office along with the train at Ludhiana station. In this way, they became the owners of the entire train. They even reached the station with lawyers for attachment of the train.

But the railway administration became alert and immediately stopped this order due to which Suvarn Singh could actually be the owner of the train for only 5 minutes. The case is said to be still pending in the court, but Suvarn Singh’s name has been recorded in history as the train owner and even today people are unable to believe this.
