In fact, in the hospital ‘Sir Gangaram Hospital’, not just one but 39 coins and 37 magnets were found in the stomach of a 26 year old patient. It is being said that the patient came to know that there is zinc deficiency in his body, hence he swallowed 39 coins and 37 magnets.
In this situation the patient was admitted
According to the patient’s family, the patient is mentally ill and has a habit of eating coins. For the last 20 days, he is suffering from frequent vomiting and stomach pain. After which the family took the patient to the hospital and after the operation, the coins and magnets were taken out. The patient was admitted to the emergency ward of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The patient was not even able to eat anything.
The patient was first seen by Dr. Tarun Mittal, senior consultant in the out-patient department. Relatives of the patient said that he had been eating coins and magnets for the last few weeks. The patient was also being treated for a known psychiatric case. The patient’s relatives conducted an X-ray of his stomach, which revealed radio-opaque shadows in his stomach in the shape of coins and magnets. A CT scan of the stomach revealed that the heavy load of coins and magnets was causing blockage in the intestine. The patient immediately agreed for surgery.
During the surgery it was discovered that the magnet and the coin were present in two separate loops in the small intestine. The magnetic effect pulled both loops together and destroyed it. The intestines were opened and the coins and magnets were taken out. Both loops were reconnected by two separate anastomoses. When his stomach was inspected, a large quantity of coins and magnets were also found there. Later his stomach was opened and all the coins were taken out and his stomach was repaired. Doctors said that a total of 39 coins (₹1, 2, 5 coins) and 37 magnets (heart, circular, star, bullet and triangle shapes) were recovered from his stomach.
After the surgery, doctors took pre-operative X-rays of the patient, which showed that all foreign bodies had been removed. He also said that the patient tolerated the procedure well and was discharged in healthy condition after seven days.
