First winery opened in 1999
Rajeev Suresh Samant, CEO of Sula Vineyards, says Nashik may be an ancient city, but wine production is a completely new thing for the region. When Samant returned to his family’s native India from California in the 1990s, he immediately noticed the lack of local wine in the country. Seeing the area’s potential, growing middle class and growing population, Samant saw an opportunity. In 1999, he opened Sula Vineyards, Nashik’s first winery.

The tradition of alcohol has vanished.
Samant explains, “Nashik was always famous for its grapes and in fact, India had a wine tradition going back 500 years. There were vineyards in Kashmir and outside Hyderabad, then for 200 or 300 years wine disappeared completely.” They say wine production declined due to several reasons, including the devastating phylloxera pest outbreak in the 19th century, the cultural shift toward beer under British rule (1858–1947), and the prohibition liquor laws established by the Constitution of India in 1950 Are.

The goal was to make good wine
After studying wine in California, Samant’s goal was to create bottles of international standard. Sula has a temperature and humidity controlled barrel room with over 1,300 oak barrels of Shiraz, Rasa Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Oak and wine are a match made in heaven. The job of oak is to elevate the wine, making it softer, richer and more complex.

At present, Samant estimates that the share of wine in all alcoholic beverages consumed in India will be around two percent. But its consumption is increasing much faster than any other alcoholic beverage. Wine is going to become a very important beverage in the coming years. Certainly Nashik also has a big role in this.
