Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was the Prosecutor General of Tehran between 1989 and 1994 and then the Deputy Chief of the Judicial Authority for a decade from 2004. After this he remained the Chief of the Iranian Supreme Court. Raisi is considered close to Iran’s fundamentalist leader and the country’s supreme religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He was elected President of the Islamic Republic of Iran in June 2021.

This committee conducted ‘re-trial’ of those prisoners who were already serving jail sentences due to their political activities.
