Why are airplanes flown only at an altitude of 30 to 40 thousand feet? Is mileage also a factor?

Aeroplane: Plane is the fastest means of transport for long distance travel as well as saving time. Passenger planes mostly fly at 30 or 40 thousand or more. In case of an accident at such a height, the risk is also high and the oxygen also gets reduced. Now the question is why the airplane is flown at the same height even after this?

increases mileage

There are many reasons for flying the plane at high altitude. Dense air molecules are the reason for not flying at low altitude. At high altitude the air remains thin and air molecules are also negligible. Due to this, the airplane can fly with full capacity, due to which the mileage of the plane also increases.

fear of birds and clouds

There is a danger of birds hitting the plane while flying at low altitude. Many such cases have been seen when the emergency landing of the plane had to be done due to the collision of birds. Birds cannot fly above 40,000 feet or more. In such a situation, flying the plane at such an altitude is safer than at a lower altitude. The pilot has to take special care of the birds only at the time of take off and landing.

threat of storm or turbulence

Storms formed in the air of airplanes also remain a big challenge. Water present in low altitude clouds creates turbulence in the plane. Turbulence also damages aircraft. At the same time, passengers also get nervous due to turbulence. At an altitude of 40 thousand feet, the clouds remain below the plane. Due to which this type of problem does not have to be faced.

danger of colliding with mountains

If the plane will be at a low altitude, then there will be a problem in passing through the hilly area. The height of many mountains in the Himalayan range is up to 24,000 feet. In this situation, there is a danger of the plane hitting the mountain peaks.

Get instructions from ATC

The highest limit to fly the plane is 42,000 feet. Actually, to take it to a higher altitude, the engine of the plane will have to apply a lot of power. Apart from this, the pressure in the cabin of the plane will decrease a lot. Therefore, in terms of safety, planes can fly only within a certain height. The pilot receives instructions from the costal ATC to increase or decrease the altitude.
