When Pakistan separated from India in 1947, it did not just take a piece of land with it during partition. Rather, it took many things that you cannot even imagine. Even the things that were in one piece, were cut into half and taken with it. Similarly, a book was divided. Today, one part of this book is with Pakistan and the other part is with India. Let us tell you the whole story of this book.
Which book was that?
The name of the book we are talking about was Encyclopedia of Britannica. When the things present in the country were being divided, the matter got stuck on Encyclopedia of Britannica. Actually, there was only one copy of this book and both the countries did not want to leave it. In the end, when things did not work out, it was divided into two parts, one of which is in Pakistan today and the other in India.
Regarding this book, Vijayalakshmi Balakrishnan writes in her book ‘Growing Up and Away: Narratives of Indian Childhoods: Memory, History, Identity’ that apart from the Encyclopedia of Britannica, the dictionary present in the library was also divided into two parts and was divided between the two countries. Today, the dictionary from A to K is with India and the rest is with Pakistan.
Pakistan did not distribute this thing
At the time of partition, Pakistan participated in everything. Distributed everything. But there was one thing that Pakistan could not distribute and did not even take with it. That thing was a lot of wine barrels. Actually, Pakistan is an Islamic country and drinking alcohol is considered haram there, therefore at the time of partition, Pakistan did not ask for half share in the alcohol barrels.
