Why is a white ball used in ODIs and T20 matches? Is there any special reason behind it?

Whereas only white balls are used in ODI and T-20 matches. 

Cricket ball

The structure of a cricket ball is very solid and it is made with the help of leather and cork. At present, three coloured balls are used in all formats of cricket. These include red, white and pink coloured balls. The weight of cricket balls is between 155.9 grams and 163 grams and its circumference is between 22.4 and 22.9 centimetres. However, the ball used in women’s cricket is slightly smaller than this.

Red coloured ball

The red coloured ball is used in cricket since ancient times. Red coloured ball is used in Test cricket, domestic cricket and first class cricket, these red coloured balls are stitched with white coloured thread.

White coloured ball

Till 28 November 1978, only red coloured ball was used in cricket. But a one day match of a world series between Australia and West Indies was to be played under floodlights at Sydney Cricket Ground, where a white ball was chosen. White ball is used in One Day and T-20 cricket, so that players can easily see the ball in matches played under floodlights. Currently, white ball is used in every one day format, these white balls are stitched with dark green thread.

Pink ball

In cricket, pink ball is used only in day-night test matches, so that players can easily see the ball even at night. Let us tell you that for the first time in July 2009, pink ball was used in ODI match between Australia and England women’s team. The pink coloured ball is stitched with black thread.
