How is the color of henna made?
Let us tell you that henna leaves contain a special type of chemical, which is called Lawsone. When henna leaves are ground to make a paste and it is applied on the hand, Lawsone reacts chemically with the protein (keratin) present in the skin of the hand. Due to this reaction, red or dark brown color is produced on the hand.
Why only red color?
According to the information, the natural color of Lawsone ranges from orange to dark brown. But when it reacts with the skin, its color changes to red or dark brown. Applying mehendi does not give green, blue, yellow or pink colour because the chemical structure of lawsone cannot produce such colours.
Mehendi plant?
Let us tell you that mehendi is a member of the Lythraceae family. The flowers of the plants of this family are very beautiful and fragrant. The leaves of mehendi are green in appearance and only these leaves are used for applying. On grinding mehendi, a natural dye (lawsone) comes out from its leaves. When this lawsone comes in contact with keratin, it gives a red colour. Keratin protein is found in the exoskeleton i.e. skin, nails and hair. That is why on applying ground mehendi, this red colour gets onto the skin and remains there for many days.
