Actually, the word road is used behind the name of the railway station to inform that it is away from the city. That means you will have to go to the city via road. The train drops you at some distance from the city. According to an Indian Railways official, the word ‘road’ attached to a railway station indicates that a road runs from this railway station to reach that city and passengers going to that city get down here.

Now the question is, what is the distance of the city from the station named Road? The distance from such a station to the city can range from 2 km to 100 km. For example, Kodaikanal city is 79 kilometers away by Kodaikanal road. Similarly, Hazaribagh Road Railway Station is 66 kilometers away from Hazaribagh City and Ranchi City is 49 kilometers away from Ranchi Road Station.
Why are they built away from the city?
Actually, railway stations were made away from these cities only when there was a big problem in laying the railway line to those cities. As the cost of laying a railway line on Mount Abu mountain would have been very high, therefore a railway station has been built below the mountain, 27 kilometers away from Abu.
