According to Manoj Mishra of Yamuna Jiye Abhiyan, the reason for this foam is the soap and detergent coming along with the water of drains and sewerage. Apart from this, the chemical water coming out of the factories is also responsible for this. Even today, sewer water from many parts of the city goes into the rivers. After the monsoon, when the water level of the rivers starts decreasing, the pollutant particles form a layer. The amount of phosphate in the pollutants, in particular, is responsible for this layer of foam. CPCB and DPCC have also considered surfactants and phosphates as the reason for foaming.
For example, such white foam is seen in Okhla Barrage in Delhi and Yamuna River near ITO. Actually, when the gates of the barrage are opened, the water falls into the river from a great height. Because of which a layer of foam is formed. According to experts, the amount of phosphate may be high at many places in the river, but the reason for non-appearance of foam at other places is that the water there does not fall into the river from a height.
