World Sickle Cell Day 2024: Every year 19th June is celebrated as ‘World Sickle Cell Day’ all over the world. Actually, the purpose behind celebrating this day is to make more and more people aware about this disease. So that their future life can be better.
What is sickle cell disease?
Sickle cell is a type of genetic blood disorder. Which badly affects the red blood cells. Healthy blood cells are round or flexible in shape. Which delivers oxygen to all parts of the body through blood. In sickle cell disease, red blood cells are crescent shaped. And it is very solid. These deformed cells can block blood vessels. Due to which pain, fatigue, infection and many serious diseases can occur.
Symptoms of sickle cell disease
Its common symptoms are sudden pain in the body. This pain can occur in bones, muscles, back and stomach. The patient of this disease always feels weak and tired.
Sickle cell disease damages red blood cells. It causes anemia. Paleness, shortness of breath and dizziness may also occur
The risk of infection increases significantly in sickle cell disease.
This disease can cause pain in the ribs, swelling in hands and feet, jaundice, yellowing of the eyes and many serious kidney diseases. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic blood disorder that badly affects the red blood cells that carry oxygen to our body.

Types of sickle cell disease
There are different types of SCD but the most common is sickle cell anemia. These include sickle-hemoglobin C disease and sickle beta-thalassemia.

This disease is passed on to children from parents suffering from SCD. It is not necessary that every parent suffering from SCD passes the disease to their children but in most cases it is like this.
This medicine is given by doctors in SCD disease
There is no cure for SCD disease till now. But looking at its symptoms, this disease can be controlled to some extent.
Folic acid medicine is given to control this disease
Antibiotics are given to prevent infection.
