Atomic Plant Accident: Uranium, a radioactive substance used in atomic energy, is considered the most dangerous. After coming in its grip, a person cannot survive. One such terrible accident happened in Japan’s atomic plant, in which an employee was exposed to the highest level of radiation. Man would never have faced such radiation. The radiation was so dangerous that the person kept crying tears of blood for 83 days and his skin started falling off.
A man named Hisashi Ochi was helping to put uranium together at the Tokamura Atomic Energy Plant. Normally done by a hydraulic pump, but using their bare hands exposed three people in the room to this dangerous radiation. Immediately after this, among the three persons who were most vulnerable to radiation, he was able to breathe with difficulty. He was vomiting in a strange way. When he was brought to the hospital, it was found that the person had no white blood cells left, then the doctors were shocked.
The effect of radiation was visible all over the body and blood was oozing from his eyes. It was from then that thirty-five-year-old Auchi’s suffering began, that doctors effectively experimented with medical science to keep him alive against his will. Ochi was found to have absorbed 17 sievert radiation, which had never before or since occurred on a human.
Doctors in the hospital worked to keep him alive through blood transfusion and stem cell graft. The operation was a medical success and kept him alive, but it was very painful for Ochi. He reportedly continued to shout: ‘I can’t take this anymore! I’m not a guinea pig!’ On his 59th day in the hospital, Ouchi suffered three heart attacks, but each time doctors were able to revive him at the request of his family.
After 83 days of unspeakable agony, Auchi’s body gave up and he died of multiple organ failure. The technicians’ supervisor, Yutaka Yokokawa, also received treatment, but was released after three months due to minor radiation exposure. He was later charged with negligence in October 2000.
