On Tuesday, January 30, Manoj Sonkar of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Chandigarh Mayor elections and âIndiaâ alliance had to face defeat despite having more councilors. In the elections, Bharatiya Janata Party got 16 votes and Congress-AAP alliance got 12 votes.Â
Now because the India Alliance and BJP had come face to face for the first time just a few months before the general elections, the leaders of the alliance are angry with this result. Councilors of both Aam Aadmi Party and Congress sat on strike.Â
Not only this, the alliance even boycotted the elections of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. Along with this, he has decided to approach the High Court regarding the mayorâs result.
Why are the coalition councilors angry
Actually there are total 35 seats in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. Before the elections, BJP had 14 councillors, Kejriwalâs AAP had 13. Congress had 7 and Shiromani Akali Dal had 1 councillor.Â
This means that if AAP-Congress were contesting the elections together, the India Alliance had more councilors than BJP i.e. 20.Â
Now the question arises that how the Congress-AAP alliance lost the Chandigarh Mayor election despite having more numbers, know in this reportâŚÂ
1. How did BJP win even though numbers were low
To understand this in simple language, the magic number of victory for any party to win the post of Mayor is 19. Apart from this, the MP of Chandigarh also votes in the Mayor elections. That means total seats became 36. Â
BJP had 15 councilors including the votes of BJP and Akali Dal. After this, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher cast her vote for BJP. Overall Bharatiya Janata Party got 16 votes. On the other hand, Congress and AAP had 20 votes each.Â
In such a situation, everyone expected that the Indian alliance would win very easily. But when the results of the mayor election came, the result was different. According to the results, BJP got a total of 16 votes in the elections. Whereas the alliance got only 12 votes. 8 votes of the alliance were not included in the counting. Not only this, no other reason was given for doing this.Â
2. Had the vote not been cancelled, AAP-Congressâs victory was certainÂ
Now even if BJPâs victory has been declared in the results, if the votes of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress councilors had not been cancelled, then the Indian alliance would definitely have won.
3. Why were eight ballot papers declared invalid?
After this whole matter, Presiding Officer Anil Masih said in a statement given to news agency ANI, âThere should not be any tick marks or marks in the ballot paper. After voting, we declared the eight ballot papers in which such marks were found invalid. However, he also gave this reason after the uproar over the election results. â
Know the oppositionâs allegations alsoÂ
8 After finding no reason for the cancellation of votes, the opposition started creating ruckus. The opposition is alleging that there has been rigging in counting the votes or declaring these ballot papers invalid. Not only this, AAP party has decided to approach Punjab and Haryana High Court in this entire matter.
Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chaddha expressed his displeasure over this entire matter and said, "The presiding officer has committed treason, he should be arrested. The case should proceed. We will complain, demand action, in fact we will demand his arrest."
At the same time, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also wrote on social media platform It is beyond imagination. Years ago, on this day, Godse had assassinated Gandhiji and today Godseists sacrificed his ideals and constitutional values.â
Chief Minister of Punjab Bhagwant Mann has also given his reaction on this entire matter. He said, âA few days ago, on January 26, Republic Day was celebrated. Now the Constitution has been crushed in the elections. I would say that BJP has looted the mayor elections.â
What does the presiding officer have to say on the oppositionâs allegations
Presiding Officer Anil Masih has spoken to news agency ANI amid the uproar over this entire matter. He said that the process of mayor election was going on quite peacefully. We had 36 votes including one MP.Â
He further said that while releasing the ballot papers, the councilors of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress expressed concern about the marks on the ballot papers. We also accepted his request and issued 11 new ballot papers.Â
Anil Masih further says, âNow after the voting, when I announced the results, I had requested the polling agents of both BJP and Aam Aadmi Party-Congress to check the ballot papers. But instead of checking the paper, the people of India Alliance jumped in. They came and captured the ballot paper and tore it.â
According to the presiding officer, it is not the BJP but the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party that have tried to kill democracy.
Now understand how important is the election of Mayor in Chandigarh?
1. Chandigarh is the capital of Punjab and Haryana and in this election Aam Aadmi Party and Congress are contesting together. If the alliance experiment between Congress and AAP had been successful, BJPâs problems would have increased.Â
2. Despite the common man having the maximum number of councilors, this constituency is not able to get its mayor in the Municipal Corporation. The party was hopeful that by coming together with the Congress, it would have won the elections comfortably this time.
3. There is one Lok Sabha seat in Chandigarh. If the alliance experiment of Congress and AAP had been successful here, then it would undoubtedly have affected the Lok Sabha seat as well.Â
