In a fight between two people in Etah, Uttar Pradesh, the police arrested a third innocent person and took him to the police station. He was kept hungry and thirsty the whole night. He died on Monday morning. The station in-charge and clerk have been suspended after being found guilty prima facie.

The incident is from Dalshahpur village of Nidhauli Kalan police station area. Village resident Devendra said that he runs a puncture repair shop in the village. He also plays band. Rakesh (52) of the village also worked at the shop. Band owner Hussain Ali owed him about 5000 rupees for wages. When I asked him for the money at around 9 o’clock on Sunday night, he beat me up. He fell down after being punched in the nose.

Someone called the police from my mobile. The PRV arrived at around 9:30 pm. From there, they picked up Hussain, Devendra and Rakesh and brought them to the police station. We were kept in the lockup at night. We were not given anything to eat or drink. We were not given anything on Monday morning either. The power went off at around 9 am. Rakesh’s condition worsened. He fainted and fell down and died.

Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Singh said that none of their relatives came on Sunday night. Due to this they were kept at night. But, not giving them food etc. is a big negligence. It is summer season, probably due to not getting food, Rakesh’s health deteriorated.

He was sent to Nidhauli Kalan CHC. He later died. Police station in-charge JP Ashok and clerk Mohit have been suspended for negligence. An investigation is also being conducted. Further action will be taken according to whatever other information comes to light.
