Researchers excavating an archaeological site in Turkey were surprised when they found 11 thousand years old treasure underground. Creepy things were also seen. When it was investigated, a sensational revelation came to light, which even experts were surprised to know about. After this revelation, it can be said that the traditions which are an important part of our lives even today, were developed thousands of years ago. The name of the place where this discovery took place is Boncuklu Tarla archaeological site.
Experts said that during the excavation of the land, scary things like human bones were found, as well as treasures in the form of ornaments and jewelery made of different metals wrapped in them. When carbon dating of all these things was done, evidence was found of the tradition of ear-nose piercing that had been going on for thousands of years. The Ankara University team made this revelation while examining more than 100 pieces of jewellery. Till now it has been believed that the tradition of piercing nose and ears is hundred-two hundred years old.
Archaeologists said that all these ornaments were found directly next to their ears and chin, which provided strong evidence that they were worn after getting holes in the ears and nose. Of the jewelery found in the discovery, 85 are in perfect condition, mostly made of limestone, obsidian or river pebbles. The team said that their different shapes suggest that they were designed to be worn in both the ear and the lower lip. Not only this, this investigation has also revealed that this jewelery was worn not only by women but also by men.
Children’s noses were not pierced at that time
Nowadays, even children’s nose and ears are pierced, but this was not the case then. During that time only adults used to do this. The investigating team said that we did not find any jewelery of any kind at the place where the babies were buried, which proves that the tradition of piercing the bodies of children did not exist at that time. Researchers also said that this shows that piercing of nose, ears and lips is not only aesthetic, but also has social importance. It indicates that a person has reached maturity.
Dr Emma Bassel, who was involved in the discovery, said: ‘This shows that the traditions that are still an important part of our lives were developed thousands of years ago, when people first entered Western Europe more than 10,000 years ago. Started settling in permanent villages in Asia. They had very complex ornamentation practices involving beads, bracelets and pendants, including a very developed symbolic world, expressed through the human body.’
