A crowd of devotees gathered in Ghodapur to see the turban given by Lord Swaminarayan in Surat years ago. The turban given by Lord Swaminarayan 200 years ago is kept for darshan on Bhai Bija Day. Swaminarayan Bhagwan, who came to Surat in 1881, gave his turban and quince to the then Parsi Kotwal Ardesar, which is still with the Parsi family for 199 years and has been kept as safe as life itself. Believing that the head of God is with them, this Parsi family lovingly presents the turban to everyone.
religious affiliation
This turban is 200 years old. There is also a religious belief hidden behind this. This turban is not an ordinary turban, but it was worn by Lord Swaminarayan centuries ago. 200 years ago, when Lord Swaminarayan came to Surat, he gave a gift to Ardeshar, who was acting as Kotwal at that time. Since then this turban has been served and preserved in Surat till date.
Importance of Swaminarayan’s turban
The religious tradition behind the turban is that Lord Swaminarayan came to Surat in 1881. After staying in Surat for a few days, Bhagwan, who was pleased with the service of Ardeshar Kotwal, gave a quince and his turban to the Kotwal before returning on Magashar Sud Trayodashi of Samwant 1881. However, Lord Swaminarayan had given the turban to Ardeshar Kotwal 200 years ago. It passed to his son Jahangir Shah, but when he died young, the turban passed from his wife Doshibai Kotwal to his vassal Sorabji Adalji Wadia. And from there the currently living third generation, Tehamasp and his son Kershasp, are preserving it like their life.
Parsi family tradition
Originally this family belongs to the Parsi community, but in the last few years they have adopted Swaminarayanism along with their religion. That’s why the Wadia family living in Syedpura area has made a separate room for Pagh. In order to ensure that the turban does not suffer any damage, the turban has been kept safe in a wooden box. Every year Paghana is seen on the day of Bhai Beej. He also worships Pagh every morning. Members of the Parsi family preserve the turban of Lord Shriji as their headgear and along with tying the kanthi of Shriji, also wear the Janoi of Parsi religion.
