Genetic testing and biotechnology company 23andme has applied for bankruptcy. The company, which started in 2006, was struggling with difficulties for a long time. Earlier, it had to face trial about data breech. After this, independent directors resigned from its board. With this, due to the closure of the drug development division, the company’s difficulties started increasing and now the company is looking for potential buyers. In such a situation, the big concern is about the data of crores of people present with the company. Now the question is being asked that what is going to happen with the personal and genetic data of 1.5 crore people around the world in the event of bankruptcy?
The company used to collect genetic data
The 23andme company used to collect genetic data of people. Based on this data, on the basis of their ancestors and current health, future diseases etc. were estimated. This genetic data includes complete information of people. In such a situation, after the sale of the company, concern is being expressed about this data. Regarding this, Professor Anya Prince at the College of Lova of the University of Lova said that the company’s privacy policy regarding data has said that in the event of bankruptcy, the data can go to the new company or it can be sold.
Will the new company have to accept the privacy policy?
Prince said that it is written in the privacy policy of 23andme that the new company will also have to accept this policy. This may look good to hear, but this policy says that it can be changed anytime. In such a situation, the new company can also change by considering old privacy, even if customers do not like it. Let us know that in 2023, 23andme data was hacked, in which the data of about 7 million users was leaked. This data was present for sale on the dark web.
