A unique case of negligence in a hospital has recently become famous. In this, a very bad and unwanted accident happened with a two-year-old innocent girl. The girl was first admitted to the hospital due to a viral disease. But she was soon declared cured and discharged, but her condition deteriorated again and she died. Her parents say that her death was ‘completely avoidable’.
Doctors initially believed Pippa Mae White, 2, had an infection when she was brought to the Cowra emergency ward in New South Wales with fever, diarrhoea and vomiting. In fact, the girl had pneumonia and developed sepsis, which proved fatal. An inquest into Pippa’s death in Sydney last week heard doctors did not spot the septic infection until it was too late.
Despite being tested after arriving in Cowra on 12 June 2022, the baby’s mother Anna was told to take Pippa home unless she became very ill because the hospital was very busy. Anna had to bring her back to the hospital within five hours. This time, when her condition worsened, the baby was transferred to Orange Base Hospital, a larger hospital. Tests there revealed that she had pneumonia.

As doctors were preparing to move her to a third hospital, Pippa suffered two heart attacks. She died after the second hospital and was pronounced dead shortly after 1pm on June 13.
The inquest will assess the care Pippa received between her arrival at Cowra Hospital’s emergency ward and her death at Orange Hospital the following day, and will determine whether her death could have been prevented.
Her parents Brock and Anna claimed their little girl’s death was “completely avoidable”, and vowed to fight for changes to the healthcare system so no other family experiences the same pain.
