A British national living abroad was shocked after ordering fish and chips in India. He was served something that was unrecognisable. The hungry traveller shared a picture of his dish on social media, but it didn’t taste exactly like he expected. He was expecting his home-cooked dish. But while many users seemed equally surprised, one Indian user clarified what it actually was?
“I’m an English huckster traveling to India,” he posted on Reddit. “Feeling like some British food and ordered fish and chips… but, what a sight!” Instead of golden battered fish, the man shared a photo of half a dozen brown pieces.
Fellow Brits on Reddit couldn’t resist sharing their thoughts. One cheeky user joked: “Just because you saw it swimming in a river doesn’t mean it’s a fish.” Another wrote: “Before zooming in they almost looked like little chocolate doughnuts and it looked like one of them had a little caramel oozing out of it which I wouldn’t eat with potatoes but I might have one or two.”

A third joked: “Did you accidentally order crap and chips?” Meanwhile a fourth was less amused. “I feel so sick right now moaning to myself in a hotel room (food poisoning maybe?)… wish you had kept this misfortune to yourself today.”
Eventually, someone explained in a delicious way what this food might be. He said, “They are probably fish cutlets, at least my wife’s family would call it a cutlet. There is meat inside, probably fish in this case, and breading of chickpeas or something similar (lentils, peas, flour) and deep fried. Of course there are some Indian spices too which give it a darker color. In my house they are usually made with meat, and are very tasty.”
