In a strange order, if a person was serving a sentence for a crime that he did not commit, then his compensation will now be reduced. According to this decision of the British government, such victims will have to bear the costs of “bed and food” for the time spent in jail. Now this will affect a person who has spent 17 years in jail by mistake, now he will get about Rs 1 crore 7 lakh less in compensation.
Surprisingly, this is not a new rule, but a rule that was in force till last year, which was changed and now it has been re-implemented. The British government has informed the victims of historical failures of justice that now these expenses will be reduced in the compensation paid to those wrongly imprisoned as per the decision.
One of these victims is Andrew Malkinson, who spent 17 years in prison for being falsely accused of raping a woman in Salford, Greater Manchester in 2003. According to the BBC, he will receive 100,000 pounds or Rs 1,06,88639 less from his compensation to pay for these costs, even though he is now innocent.

It turns out that former Justice Secretary Alex Chalk last year ended the previous policy that allowed for such deductions. The new rule reverses this change, placing a financial burden on individuals who have already suffered enough injustice. Malkinson spent nearly two decades in prison for a rape he didn’t commit.
He was formally acquitted by the Court of Appeal last July. He has called for a complete overhaul of the jury and appeals system to provide greater protection to those wrongly convicted. Mr Malkinson said that even with the cost of living rule removed, he expected to wait two years for any compensation while the independent board, which determined how much he should receive, made its decision.
