The digging done for repairs in the house sometimes surprises. When a couple bought an old house and started renovating it, they did not expect that a surprise was waiting for them. When he was digging the land near the hallway for the expansion of the house, he noticed that the soil was slipping down. What they came to know after that not only left them stunned, but also left them wondering what to do with it.
Victoria Ellington, 36, and her husband Andrew, 40, were stunned when they discovered a 200-year-old secret well down the hall. The 27 feet well located near his front door is believed to be centuries old. Crystal-clear water was found in it.
The couple is from Redcar, North Yorkshire. They were reluctant to hide it, so they found a way to incorporate it into their property. After months of effort, Victoria and Andrew installed a pump to create a wishing well protected by glass.

The couple now rents out their beach front property, called Bute Cottage, to vacationers who can enjoy the unique water views. Victoria, a mother of two, said she bought the cottage during the 2020 Covid lockdown and Andrew, a builder, started renovating it.
They were planning to add an extension and build a family home, but the foundations began to shift and they knew something was up. A closer look revealed that it was a very deep well right on top of the property near the front door. He was digging the foundation and all the soil was falling into this hole. As such they could not build an extension, so Andrew decided to make it part of the building and then they could rent out the cottage.
Instead of cementing the well, he opted to cover it with glass walkways and decorate the walls of the shaft with lights. Victoria, mother of five-year-old Oscar and nine-year-old Henry, shared, “Our sons were excited about having a nice well, so we thought we should make it a reality. We have installed lights on the walls of the well and the glass has been removed.”
Now they can pour water into the well and they have a small space for people to make wishes come true. You can see till the bottom. Andrew tried to measure it and it is about 27 feet deep. The couple completed the renovation earlier this month and have now put the two-bedroom cottage on rent for Rs 6,500 per week.
