The grandmothers of Jabalpur have been telling stories related to this palace for years, in which there is a mention of 2 gold bricks. There is one or the other story associated with every part of the palace built at a height of 500 feet.

History of Madan Mahal Fort
Senior journalist and historian Jayant Verma says that this palace was built in the 19th century. Raja Madan Shah, the ruler of the Gondwana kingdom, built it for his wife, the brave queen Durgavati. Madan Shah wanted a cantonment from where one could keep an eye on the far-off places. The architecture of the palace is such that even an earthquake cannot harm this building.

The royal family once lived there
At one time the royal family lived in this palace. Many types of rooms and ponds were built here. Keeping the security in mind, tunnels were also built in different parts. But then attacks happened, after which this fort was converted into a watch tower.

gold brick proverb
As soon as the name of Madan Mahal is mentioned, the people of Jabalpur definitely tell the proverb about the golden bricks. The proverb is something like this – ‘In the shade of Madan Mahal, between two legs, two golden bricks worth nine lakhs are buried.’ This is the reason why the story of golden bricks is told in this fort. However, till date, no one has been able to get hold of these bricks.

The whole city is visible from the fort
While building this palace, enemies were kept in mind. For this reason, it was built at a height. The entire view of Jabalpur is visible from its top. A tower was also built here, from where the view of attacking enemies was clearly visible. The palace stands on two granite rocks.

The Secret of the 12 Caves
There are 12 caves in Madan Mahal. All the caves have been closed now. One cave is also connected to the Shitla Mata temple. It is believed that the queen used to come and go from these caves. However, no map of the caves has been revealed till date.

How to reach
Direct trains to Jabalpur run from many places like Delhi. Such as Jabalpur Gondwana Express and Indore Jabalpur Express. Many buses also go to Jabalpur. The city also has its own airport. You can easily reach this fort by auto. In summer, do check the temperature before going here.
