HMPV In India: Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has taken a terrible form in China. There is an emergency like situation in the country. Its cases have also been reported in India. Till now, two cases were reported from Karnataka and one from Gujarat in India, but on Monday (January 6, 2024), two more new cases of HMPV were reported from Chennai. In such a situation, there have now been a total of five cases of HMPV across the country.
According to PTI report, these cases have been reported in two different hospitals in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu. At present no further information has been revealed regarding these matters. Meanwhile, state health department officials have held a meeting to discuss the steps to be taken to check HMPV and precautions to be taken to prevent its infection.
No need to worry – JP Nadda

Advisory issued across the country
Even though the governments are saying that there is no need to worry about the HMPV cases reported across the country, on the other hand various states have also issued advisories regarding this. From the Union Health Ministry to the governments of Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Rajasthan, special guidelines have been issued in this regard.
Three cases from Karnataka and Gujarat
Before the cases were reported in Tamil Nadu, two cases were reported from Karnataka and one from Gujarat. In all three cases the infected are infants. Of the two babies in Karnataka who have been infected, one is a three-month-old newborn. The second case is of an 8 month old baby. Both of them were admitted to the hospital with a history of bronchopneumonia. The third case was from Gujarat, in which the girl is 2 months old and her report has come positive.
