Graziano Ranocchia, a philosopher at the University of Pisa, and his colleagues used artificial intelligence (AI) to decipher text preserved on burnt fragments of papyrus recovered in Herculaneum, an ancient Roman city located near Pompeii, according to a translated statement from Italy’s National Research Council. Used, which is located about 200 km south of Rome.

Herculaneum was destroyed after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius volcano in 79 AD. One of the scrolls burned by the explosion contains the writings of Philodemus of Gadara, an Epicurean philosopher who studied in Athens. This text, known as the “History of the Academy”. While it was known that Plato was buried in the Academy, destroyed by a Roman general in 86 BC. But it was not known exactly where he was buried.
