Alha-Udal Fort: The most important fort of Bundelkhand, where not everyone can reach.

Chhatarpur: The historical fort of Alha-Udal is situated in Barigarh of Chhatarpur district, at a short distance from Mahoba, which was built during the reign of Chandela kings. This fort remains a mystery to people even today due to its huge structure and difficult access. The uniqueness of the construction of the fort and its security measures make it one of the most important forts of Bundelkhand.

Powerful fort of Chandela rulers
According to Dr. Kashi Prasad Tripathi’s book ‘Forts of Bundelkhand’, this fort was built in 1040 AD by Chandela ruler Vijay Varman of Mahoba. Barigarh Fort is also known as “Bari Durg” or “Durg Vijay Fort”. It was named “Barigarh” because there was a bari (wall) around it, which protected it from enemies. The most special thing about the fort is that the commanders of Chandela kings, Alha and Udal, lived here, who monitored the security of the fort from far and wide.

Fort’s defenses and massive walls
The security of the fort was so strong that it was almost impossible for the invaders to penetrate it. As soon as you enter the fort, the first thing you find is the huge “Elephant Gate”, from where elephants and horses used to enter the fort. A 12 kilometer long and more than 20 feet high granite wall has been built around the fort. This wall was built to protect against invasion, and was made so strong that it was difficult to penetrate even in the dark of night.

Alha-udal pond
There was also a pond inside the fort, where Alha and Udal used to take bath. This pond was an important part of the history of the fort, but with time its existence has almost ceased. With the passage of years this pond has been filled up, but its historical importance is still alive.

Alha-Udal Ki Dahlan: Highest point of the fort
The Dahlan of Alha-Udal is built at the highest point inside the fort. This Dahlan was used for surveillance up to 20 kilometers around the fort. The activities of the enemies were monitored from this place. This dahalan is made of brick and lime, and has four rooms. Seeing this, everyone gets surprised as to how it was possible to build such a big palace at such a height.

Reaching the fort is still a challenge
This fort of Barigarh is situated at a height and reaching here is not within everyone’s reach. The structure of the fort and its difficult accessibility make it a unique and historical heritage. People who reach here are amazed to see its vastness and construction style.

This fort is not only a symbol of the bravery and power of the Chandela rulers, but is also an integral part of the history of Bundelkhand. The stories of Alha-Udal and their bravery are still alive in the stones and walls of this place, which provides a unique experience to every visitor.
