The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fielded its candidates in all the 182 assembly seats in Gujarat with the aim of making a dent in the BJP’s stronghold and also launched an aggressive campaign.
During the election campaign, the AAP presented itself and its national convenor Kejriwal as the only challengers to the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, respectively. The outcome of the elections in Modi’s home state will determine whether AAP can successfully dislodge the Congress as number two in the numbers and emerge as a major challenger to the BJP.
AAP one step away from national party status
If AAP comes second in Gujarat, it will also determine Kejriwal’s role in stopping Modi’s chariot in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Already recognized as state party in Delhi, Punjab and Goa. AAP is just one state away from attaining the status of a national party. To gain national party status, a political organization needs to be recognized in at least four states. To be recognized as a state party, a party needs to win at least two seats in the state and get six percent (6%) of the vote in the assembly elections.

In other words, to become a national party, AAP needs to win two seats and secure 6 per cent votes in the counting of votes to be held on Thursday (December 8). The status of a national party would be an impetus for your national ambition. However, in the forecast of exit polls, AAP has not been shown to get any major victory in Gujarat. The exit polls released on Monday (December 5) predicted a massive victory for the BJP in Gujarat. The exit polls showed BJP getting 117 to 151 seats in the 182-member assembly, main opposition Congress 16 to 51 seats, while AAP was predicted to get 2-13 seats.
AAP can win 12 seats in Gujarat
Praveen Rai, a political analyst at the Center for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS), told PTI, “AAP has gained momentum in Gujarat and it seems to be winning some seats in the assembly elections. It will be a big victory for AAP, even if it wins only 10-15 seats, as no third party has been able to do so in Gujarat so far.”
Dilip Gohil, an Ahmedabad-based political analyst, told PTI, “The AAP can win around 12 seats — 2-3 in Surat, 7-8 in Saurashtra, two in the tribal belt and a few in north and central Gujarat.” Can be surprised.
AAP expected to win more seats than predicted
The AAP, however, is expected to win more seats than the exit polls predicted. AAP’s Gujarat unit chief spokesperson Yogesh Jadwani, when asked about this, said, “The election results on December 8 will prove all exit polls wrong.” Quoting an internal assessment conducted by the party, he claimed that AAP would win more than 45 of the 89 seats that went to polls in the first phase on December 1. He said, “We are winning six seats in Surat and will win more than 30 seats in Saurashtra.”
