Andhra Pradesh-Telangana Flood: Heavy rains have wreaked havoc in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, leading to severe floods, loss of life and property and widespread disruption. Both states have been grappling with incessant rains for the past few days, causing rivers to overflow and vast areas including cities like Hyderabad as well as Vijayawada to be inundated.
Chief Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh A. Revanth Reddy and N. Chandrababu Naidu held emergency meetings to assess the situation and coordinate rescue operations. At the same time, Prime Minister Narendra Modi And Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke to both these Chief Ministers and assured them of sending full help from the Center.
District magistrates have been asked to declare holiday in educational institutions on September 2 as per local conditions. A South Central Railway (SCR) official said that due to heavy rains and waterlogging on tracks at many places, 99 trains were cancelled and four trains were partially cancelled, while the route of 54 trains was changed.
PM Modi took stock of the situation over the phone
Prime Minister Modi spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and enquired about the situation in these states in the wake of heavy rains and floods. He assured all possible help from the Centre to deal with this challenge.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy told PM Modi that the state government is continuously engaged in emergency relief work without causing any inconvenience to the people or loss of life and property. The Chief Minister told the Prime Minister that there has been heavy damage in Khammam district. The Prime Minister appreciated the arrangements made by the state government for working vigilantly to prevent loss of life and property.
PM Modi assured that helicopters will be sent to provide services even in bad weather. The Prime Minister said that the central government will provide necessary assistance for flood relief work.
Amit Shah also spoke to the Chief Ministers
Citing people familiar with the matter, PTI reported that amit shah has spoken to the Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and assured them of all possible help from the Centre to deal with the rains and floods in both the states. The situation is particularly serious in Khammam district, where 110 villages are submerged in flood waters.
Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said that 119 people are stranded on hills and buildings and are awaiting rescue. Sanjay Kumar said that following the Home Minister’s order, three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been sent to Telangana from Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Assam. Kumar said that he spoke to senior NDRF officials to coordinate rescue efforts and also discussed the situation and ongoing rescue operations with Telangana Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy.
9 people died in Telangana
Nine people died in separate rain-related incidents in Telangana while heavy rains continued in many parts of the state, including Hyderabad, on Sunday. An official release said that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy called an emergency meeting to review the situation in view of the continuous rains in the state.
The Chief Minister discussed with senior officials through teleconference and asked the officials of Municipal Administration, Energy, Panchayati Raj and other departments to remain alert for the next 24 hours. He directed the District Magistrates, SP, Revenue, Irrigation and Municipal Corporation officials to visit the flood affected settlements. Officials have been instructed to take immediate relief measures in the flood affected areas.
After heavy rains, drains are overflowing in many places in the state and low-lying areas are flooded. Flood water has disrupted road connectivity between villages. Many trees have been uprooted due to the impact of heavy rains and winds, while branches of many trees broke and fell on the roads.
