Keshari Nath Tripathi Passed Away: Senior BJP leader and former West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi passed away on Sunday (January 8). Keshari Nath Tripathi, former speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, was admitted to a private hospital in Prayagraj due to breathing problems. Where he was taken back home after treatment for a week. Keshari Nath Tripathi breathed his last at around 5 am on Sunday at the age of 88.

Jagdambika Pal became Chief Minister overnight
In 1998, the then Governor of Uttar Pradesh Romesh Bhandari had sacked Kalyan Singh from the post of Chief Minister. Romesh Bhandari administered the oath of Chief Ministership to Democratic Congress member Jagdambika Pal overnight. When the BJP got the news of Jagdambika Pal becoming the CM, the information was sent to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in a hurry. Vajpayee advised Kalyan Singh to approach the Supreme Court. This was implemented and the Supreme Court ordered a majority test after the hearing.
The Supreme Court had laid down strict rules regarding majority test
In a way, the Supreme Court gave relief to Kalyan Singh and ordered a majority test. However, the Supreme Court had also fixed some strict rules for conducting the floor test. It was said in the order of the Supreme Court that the proceedings of the Assembly cannot be postponed after the commencement of the floor test. Simply put, the assembly will not be adjourned without completing the floor test. Along with this, Keshari Nath Tripathi, the then Speaker of the UP Legislative Assembly, was also ordered to remain present in his seat throughout the proceedings.
Keshari Nath Tripathi was forced to hold urine
It is said that the senior BJP leader was suffering from urine related disease for a long time. Because of which he had to go to urinate frequently. On this, the Supreme Court had made it a rule to be present in the chair during the entire proceedings of the assembly to conduct the floor test. In this situation Keshari Nath Tripathi had almost given up water to avoid contempt of any Supreme Court order. So that they do not feel the need to urinate again and again.
Uproar started as soon as the proceedings started
The proceedings of the assembly started under the chairmanship of Keshari Nath Tripathi, but a ruckus broke out over the sitting on the seats of the ruling party and the opposition. To end this, two chairs were placed next to Speaker Keshari Nath Tripathi. On one of which Kalyan Singh and Jagdambika Pal sat on the other. This was the first such opportunity in Indian democracy, when people were made to sit in the assembly by placing two chairs next to the speaker’s chair. However, Jagdambika Pal was able to remain CM only for 31 hours.
Kalyan Singh won in majority test
Kalyan Singh got the support of 225 MLAs and Jagdambika Pal got 196 votes in the floor test held in the UP Assembly on 26 February 1998. According to a BBC report, 16 video cameras were installed in the House to monitor the entire process. BJP leader Kalyan Singh needed only 213 votes for majority, but he got 12 votes more than the majority mark. The interesting thing was also that during that time five MLAs were sent to jail by imposing NSA. Those who were allowed to come and vote in the House.
