According to the legend, there was a kind, generous king named Mahidhwaj. He had a younger brother, the cruel, unrighteous and unjust Brijdhwaj, who was jealous of the king or his elder brother. Brijdhwaj always wanted to harm his brother. Once, in a fit of hatred, he killed the king and buried his body under a wild Peepal tree.
After the untimely death of the king, the king started living in the Peepal tree as a ghost. Once Sage Dhoumya asked him, “How did you become a ghost?” The sage suggested that by observing the fast of Achala Ekadashi on the Ekadashi of the dark fortnight of Jyeshtha month, the king got salvation and attained a place in heaven.
