Navratri Fast: Shardiya Navratri has special significance for Hindus. This Navratri is celebrated every year in the month of Ashwin. During this time Goddess Durga is worshipped. It is believed that by worshiping Goddess Durga, one attains heavenly pleasures on earth. Besides, Navratri fast is also observed for Mother Durga. During this fast, it is necessary to follow proper diet to maintain health and energy. People who do not keep fast also stop eating garlic and onion on these days. Garlic and onion are considered tamasic food, that is why they should not be consumed.
Apart from garlic and onion, some other vegetables are also not consumed during the fast. It also includes many types of legumes. Eating legumes including beans, chickpeas and peas is prohibited during the fast. Apart from this, some vegetables like tomato, brinjal, cauliflower, broccoli and leafy greens are also avoided during the fast. Probably there are some scientific reasons behind this. Because during the fast, priority is given to eating root vegetables and those vegetables which are easy to digest and provide adequate energy.

Why don’t you eat peas?
Peas are included in both grains and vegetables. That is why it cannot be eaten during fasting. Legumes and pulses, such as beans, chickpeas and peas, are not consumed during fasting. Whereas the common belief is that peas are a vegetable. But some also consider it a fruit. It may be a little difficult to say that a pea pod is a fruit. However, botanists classify them as fruits. A pea pod is a fruit that surrounds a plant’s seeds, which are used for reproduction.
Cauliflower and cabbage are also prohibited
Cauliflower, cabbage and broccoli are also not consumed during the fast. Vegetables like cauliflower come in the category of cruciferous. These often produce gas after consumption, the main reason for which is that they contain high amounts of FODMAPs. That is why a fasting person should not consume cabbage, because it causes gas and acidity problems.

Brinjal is also a vengeful food
Brinjal should also not be eaten during fasting. Brinjal has been kept in the category of tamasic food. Tamasic food is included in the prohibited items during fasting. Brinjal is considered impure in the scriptures. Because it contains insects, which have bad effects when they enter the body. Therefore one should avoid eating brinjal also. Apart from this, an element called oxalate is found in brinjal, which reduces the absorption of calcium and can worsen the health of bones.
Mushrooms are considered impure
According to the scriptures, eating mushrooms is prohibited for those observing fast. Because it is generally a vegetable that increases impurity. This comes under the category of impure food. Those observing the fast need to maintain purity as they worship the gods. Mushroom comes in the fungus family. Many people may have problems related to the digestive system like diarrhea, stomach ache, vomiting, nausea after eating mushrooms. Anyway, digestive problems arise during fasting.

What else is forbidden to eat?
Eating ladyfinger, ridge gourd and beans is also prohibited during the fast. Apart from this, leafy vegetables like spinach are also not consumed during the fast. All types of vegetables cannot be eaten during Navratri fast. During Navratri, people often include Sama rice, water chestnut flour, sago, buckwheat flour, fruits and vegetables in their fasting items. Often people remain confused as to which vegetables they can eat during fasting.
