Waqf Board Bill: Regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal has said that the committee working on it is making good progress and its results will come soon. Union Law Minister Meghwal said during a program of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) magazine “Panchjanya” on Tuesday (January 14, 2025) that the Modi government has taken a big decision regarding the Waqf Bill.
While speaking to news agency PTI, the Union Minister declined to comment on the Places of Worship Act, saying the matter is sub judice but if the Supreme Court asks the Center to file an affidavit, the Center will do so in the “national interest”. Will present an affidavit. In response to a question on the Waqf Bill, the Union Minister said that Narendra Modi The government took a “big decision” and brought the bill. This bill was passed by the Union Cabinet.
What has happened so far regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill?
Waqf Board is the third most wealthy institution in India. After the Defense Ministry and the Indian Railways, if anyone has the maximum number of properties under its control, it is the Waqf Board. Waqf has 8.72 lakh properties and 3.56 lakh properties spread over a total of 9.4 lakh acres of land. The government claims that there are some shortcomings in the old law which have been rectified in the amendment; after presenting this bill in the Lok Sabha, it was sent to the JPC. Now JPC is waiting for the report.
There are a total of 31 members in JPC, out of which 21 members are from Lok Sabha and 10 members are from Rajya Sabha. Members of Lok Sabha include Jagdambika Pal, Nishikant Dubey, Tejashwi Surya, Sanjay Jaiswal, Asaduddin Owaisi, Arun Bharti, Arvind Sawant and other leaders. There are leaders from Rajya Sabha like Brijlal, Dr. Medha Vishram Kulkarni, Ghulam Ali, Sanjay Singh, Mohammad Abdullah, V Vijaysai Reddy, Radha Mohan Das Agarwal, Syed Naseer Hussain.
