CAA: Lok Sabha Elections Citizenship Amendment Act in the country before 2024 (CAA) has come into force. However, hearing against CAA is also going on in the Supreme Court. Amidst all these things, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that till now only one person from Barak Valley has applied for citizenship under CAA in the state.

According to India Today report, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that there is no such thing as CAA. No one has applied in the state yet. So far only one person has demanded citizenship under CAA, who is a resident of Barak Valley.

‘Protest against CAA based on misunderstanding’
While talking to the media, Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the protest against CAA was based on misunderstanding and now they (protesters) have got their answer. He said that many days have passed since the implementation of CAA. Only one application has come so far in Assam. Taking aim at those protesting against CAA, he said that they used to say that people will come to the state by the truckload.

The CM claimed that a certain section of people are doing politics on emotional basis, which has now been proved. Giving the example of Sonari constituency, he said that there are many Bengali speaking communities here, but no one has applied for citizenship under CAA.

Hearing will be held in Supreme Court on April 9
Hearing on 237 petitions filed in the Supreme Court against CAA is to be held on Tuesday (April 9, 2024). The constitutionality of CAA was challenged in the Supreme Court. A three-member bench of the Supreme Court is hearing this case. CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra are part of this bench.

During the last hearing, the Supreme Court had given three weeks time to the Central Government to file its reply on these petitions. Its validity period is ending today i.e. on 8th April. It is noteworthy that the Central Government had issued a notification to implement CAA on March 11, 2024. Under this, Hindu, Sikh and Christian refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan will be given Indian citizenship.
