Constitution maker Baba Saheb Ambedkar died on December 6, 1956. His wife Savita Ambedkar (Maisaheb) has written in detail about the last 24 hours and last words of Baba Saheb, who fought for the exploited and weaker sections of India throughout his life.
Maisaheb was with Baba Saheb
Baba Saheb’s wife Mai Saheb was with him in his last moments. He has given detailed information about these last 24 hours. Maisaheb has written that a day before his death i.e. on 5th December, Baba Saheb woke up at 8.30 in the morning. Baba Saheb drank tea with Mai Saheb and talked for a while sitting in the lawn. Meanwhile, Baba Saheb’s secretary Nanakand Rattu came to him and after drinking tea he left for the office. Mai Saheb further writes that Baba Saheb read newspapers, after which he was given medicines and injections. At around 12.30 in the afternoon, Baba Saheb was sitting in the library writing the introduction to his book ‘The Buddha and His Dhamma’, when Mai Saheb called him for lunch. Baba Saheb had lunch and went to sleep.
Baba Saheb’s last words
Mai Saheb writes in her book that in the evening Baba Saheb met a delegation of Jain priests. After he took leave, he started reciting ‘Buddham Sharanam Gachchami’ in his mind. According to Mai Saheb, whenever Baba Saheb was in a good mood, he used to recite Buddha Vandana and Karib couplets. Maisaheb further writes that after having dinner, Baba Saheb sang Kabir’s couplet ‘Chalo Kabir tera Bhavsagar Dera’ and walked towards his bedroom with the help of his stick.
And Baba Saheb went away
Maisaheb has written in his autobiography that Baba Saheb had the habit of reading and writing till late night. However, he went to sleep that day at 11:30. This night proved to be the last night of Baba Saheb’s life and on 6th December, Baba Saheb passed away. The news of Baba Saheb’s demise spread like wildfire across the country and everyone was shocked. After this his mortal remains were taken to Mumbai, where his last rites were performed.
