The Delhi High Court will hear on January 7 the bail pleas of student activists Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other accused in the UAPA case related to the 2020 violence in north-east Delhi. Justice Naveen Chawla and Shalinder Kaur will hear these cases. Delhi Police is likely to present its arguments in these cases.

Khalid, Imam and others were booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and IPC for allegedly masterminding the February 2020 riots, in which 53 people were killed and over 700 injured. Had happened. The accused have sought bail from the court on several grounds, including their long stay in jail and similarity with co-accused who have been released on bail.

Most of the accused, including Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and Khalid Saifi, filed their bail pleas with the cases scheduled to be heard by different benches in 2022. Umar Khalid had approached the high court last year for bail for the second time after a similar bail plea was rejected by the high court in October 2022. On December 20, the court had adjourned the hearing to January 7, when the Delhi Police counsel said that Additional Solicitor General S V Raju would argue the case on behalf of the prosecution.
