Bangladesh Crisis: Amid the ongoing political turmoil in Bangladesh, India has decided to call back non-essential employees posted in its High Commission and Consulate in Bangladesh. The government has also issued an advisory regarding this. Sources say that India has evacuated all non-essential employees and their families. This step has been taken after large-scale protests over job quota, due to which Sheikh Hasina had to resign from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh and flee.
According to NDTV report, sources say that the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is still working with some of its employees, while those who have returned to India have returned on a voluntary basis. Despite the turmoil, all Indian diplomats based in Dhaka will remain in the High Commission for the time being. Non-essential employees and their families posted in the Indian High Commission and Consulate in Dhaka have returned via commercial flight. Sources said that work will continue in the High Commission.
Indians stranded in Bangladesh were brought back
According to sources, Air India and Indigo operated special flights to Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka to bring back Indians stranded in Bangladesh. More than 400 people were brought back to India through this. However, work will continue in the High Commission. In which the embassy staff is maintaining essential operations amid the unrest in the area.
Apart from the High Commission in the capital, India has assistant high commissions or consulates in several other cities, including Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet.
More than 300 people died in violent protests in Bangladesh
Bangladesh has witnessed student protests since July against the reservation system for a certain class of people in government jobs, following which these protesters demanded Sheikh Hasina to resign from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh. More than 3300 people lost their lives after the authorities used force to disperse the crowd and suppress the protests that spread across the country.
